The Cali Weed Con?

Britain's appetite for premium 'Cali' weed is fuelling an international trafficking trade, but how much of the weed being sold as 'Cali' actually comes from California?

It has become one of Britain's most desirable cannabis products - commanding premium prices because consumers associate it with California's cannabis culture - but a BBC investigation earlier this year has highlighted how organised crime groups are exploiting that reputation. The investigation found that cannabis being marketed in the UK as being of Californian origin was actually produced in Thailand, and consumers in the UK were being misled.

The National Crime Agency says Thailand overtook the US and Canada as the UK's leading source of imported cannabis in 2024, highlighting that organised crime groups continue to respond to cannabis liberalisation overseas by exploiting those markets to supply Britain.

Premium branding from legitimate cannabis industries allows importers to charge significantly more for their cannabis. Whatever its origin, there is a misconception that imported cannabis is inherently better or more sophisticated than UK-grown cannabis; the primary difference is that UK consumers are willing to pay extra for the perceived provenance.

Britain's illicit market increasingly resembles the Californian Rec market in quality, appearance and branding, so the question isn't so much where 'Cali' weed comes from, but why British consumers are willing to pay so much for the label in the first place?
